Dozens of activities and screenings mark the pace of the Dominican Global Film Festival

Educational activities, screenings, launches and good news for the Dominican cinema were developed on the first day of the most important film event in the Caribbean

(Santo Domingo, January 31, 2019) The first day of the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival included a broad agenda of activities in which film screenings, talks, and workshops on the film industry were developed, the launch of the book “La Sonrisa del Caribe” and the presentation of the documentary “The Code” that has among its protagonists the prestigious Spanish jurist Baltasar Garzón.

In an act that took place at the Blue Mall Cinema Palace, which was attended by the president of Funglode Dr. Leonel Fernández, the chairman of the FCGD Advisory Committee, Manuel Corripio, held a conversation with the ex-judge of the Spanish National Audience. Baltasar Garzón, after the presentation of  “The Code”, a documentary about the struggle of a hundred judges, prosecutors, and lawyers to build a new code of universal jurisdiction to combat genocide and impunity with the support of civil society.

Produced by Grupo Master Producciones and directed by Carles Caparrós, the documentary counts among its protagonists, in addition, with Reed Brody, American lawyer, legal adviser and spokesperson of Human Rights Watch; and Naomi Roht-Arriaza, a world expert in Impunity, Transitional Justice and International Humanitarian Law.

In the morning, the agenda of the FCGD also included the screening of “Como Si Fuera La Primera Vez”, a film that opened the festival and that elementary students could enjoy in the company of the director of the film, Mauricio Valle, the actors Ximena Romo, Paco Ruedas and Pedro Carlos Torres.

The Dominican film “Colors” had its world premiere in the framework of this twelfth edition of the FCGD, with a wide audience and with the presence of its director, Luis Cepeda, who thanked those present who filled the room. “Colors” tells the story of a young artist.

The selection of films for the night also included the films “A Family Submerged”, “Faraway Land”, “A Taxi Driver”, which kicked off the Korean Film Festival; “Joel”, “Quién Te Cantará”, “Virgin & Extra: Jaen, The Land Of Olive Oil”, from the Gastronomic Film Festival; “The Captain”, “Claire’s Camera”, “Hostages” and “Angel Face”.

Educational activities continue to position the FCGD

Those attending the Dominican Global Film Festival could be part of the first day of the Dominican Republic Film Lab, the project development laboratory that seeks to enhance film talent through training, training and meetings spaces.

The Colombian librettist and dramatist Tania Cárdenas Paulsen gave the master class “Construction of Characters” and the Spanish filmmaker Antonio Saura talked about “The management of festivals and film markets.” Meanwhile, Fiora Cruz, in charge of the Cinemateca Dominicana, spoke on “Cinematographic appreciation”.

Good news for the cinema of RD

One of the activities that generated more expectation this Thursday was the presentation of the book “La Sonrisa del Caribe”, authored by Fermin Cabanillas, a Spanish journalist who confessed his passion for Dominican cinema. The book reviews the trilogy of the successful Dominican film Lotoman, by Archie López and had already been shown at the Huelva Film Festival.

During a press conference, the producer Desireé Reyes confirmed that they are working on a quarter Lotoman and that thanks to the recent presentation of the book in the Iberian country have planned to shoot in Spain a quarter of the saga.

Miguel Céspedes, the protagonist of the successful film, was confident in the development of the Creole cinema and attributed part of the success of the national production is the support of the Law of Film Incentives.
