Dominican Global Film Festival accredited as the first Caribbean festival among the FIAPF community

With this seal of excellence, the FCGD joins the exclusive community of 47 film festivals in the world, including Berlin, Cannes and Venice, committing to respect the quality standards defined by the community of film producers.

(Cannes, May 22, 2017). The Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD) received this Monday the accreditation of the International Federation of Associations of Film Producers (FIAPF, for its acronym in French), as a “COMPETITIVE FEATURE FILM FESTIVAL” specialized in First Films, from the hand of its general director Benoit Ginisty, and Adrien Majourel, festival manager of the international organization.

The decision, which was made unanimously, during the FIAPF General Assembly that took place on May 20 in Cannes, includes the FCGD among the 47 member festivals of the organization. The accreditation process concluded by reporting that the festival meets all the standards and criteria defined by the community of film producer associations around the world and recognizes the work that the Festival team has done to create a quality film event.

Omar De La Cruz, director of the Dominican Global Film Festival, was excited about the endorsement given by the FIAPF. “It is a goal that was set years ago and that was consolidated during the tenth edition. “It is a recognition of the ten years of the festival, of the Dominican Republic, of the volunteers who work tirelessly to carry out each edition, of the national film industry and of the Global Democracy and Development Foundation (FUNGLODE),” he expressed.

De La Cruz highlighted that with this decision the FCGD becomes the first Caribbean festival with FIAPF accreditation and the third in Latin America along with the Mar de Plata International Film Festival and the Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival. “It is an honor and a privilege that demonstrates the quality of the work and how the festival has established itself in the Dominican Republic and worldwide. The decision was unanimous and extraordinary to know that the evaluation , that Adrien Majourel did, during the last edition, motivated this news,” he pointed out.

According to the president of the FIAPF, Luis Alberto Scalella, “Since the creation of the Law for the Promotion of Dominican Cinematographic Activity, implemented by President Fernández in 2010, the Dominican Republic has carried out fantastic work to promote the film industry and attract foreign producers. The Dominican Global Film Festival is a key part of this strategy and, with this decision, the FIAPF recognizes the work that the management team has done and supports the festival's ambition to become a key player in the Caribbean region. Luis Alberto Scalella added: “This accreditation, which acts as a seal of quality, will give new responsibilities to the festival, while providing them with new international opportunities.”

For his part, Doctor Leonel Fernández, former President of the Dominican Republic and President of FUNGLODE, expressed his satisfaction with this new accreditation, and conveyed the foundation's enthusiasm for the incorporation of the festival into this organization, reiterating the desire to be a accredited member and work closely with FIAPF through the Dominican Global Film Festival.

While Yvette Marichal, general director of the General Directorate of Cinema of the Dominican Republic, commented that, as a country, the Dominican Republic is proud to receive this exclusive accreditation from the FIAPF. “Being the first Caribbean festival to receive this seal of excellence is extremely important to continue the work that has been done over the years by the FCGD and our nation's film industry,” she indicated.

The FIAPF, based in BERN, Switzerland, and founded in 1933, brings together 38 associations of film producers from 31 countries, and aims to defend the creative, legal and regulatory interests of the film production sector around the world. In addition, it has an active role towards film festivals around the world, as a regulator of international film festivals.
