Director's Statement

Both “Campeones” and its sequel “Campeonex” arise from reality, no matter how surreal it may seem or no matter how cartoonish it may seem to someone. Like me, for example. Everything that appears in the film is taken from what I have known about the universe of intellectual disabilities: a very original universe because we are talking about people who have another operating system and approach problems from another place. Simpler, more direct and effective. In Campeones, above all, there is a lot of Warner cartoons. The Looney Tunes shorts are inhabited by adorable losers: Coyote, Daffy Duck... all losers with whom I would like to have a beer. With whom I would learn a lot and have fun, basically. But Ibáñez is essential, of course. I learned to tell stories through Mortadelo and Filemón. There is something in Ibáñez's universe, in terms of mechanics, in terms of constant movement, that always attracted me greatly. His visual gags, his use of color... Ibáñez's influence on me is evident, but not only in the adaptations I have made, but in the rest. Ibáñez is also in Camino and in the Campeones films.

Tinto, two adaptations of Mortadelo and Filemón, Camino and Campeones. In April 1992, together with Luis Manso, he founded the production company Cines Pendelton, where he remains to this day. The first two works he wrote and directed were the short films Aquel ritmillo (1995) and El secdleto de la tlompeta ( 1996), which become the two most awarded in Spanish cinema, including the Goya, the first of them. His beginnings were in the advertising market until he created Pendelton Films with which he began to make some short films that received numerous awards at both national and international film festivals. His first feature film, The Miracle of P. His third feature film Camino (2008) was surrounded by controversy, although it won the Goya for best director. In 2007, his short film, Binta y la gran idea, was nominated for an Oscar. In 2018, Campeones, starring Javier Gutiérrez, is released. It tells the story of a professional basketball coach who is forced to coach a team made up of people with intellectual disabilities.
