(Santo Domingo, January 27, 2023). The high school students of the Dr. Fabio Amable Mota Arts Center received Carlos Mario Pineda, Colombian film critic and university professor in Medellín, in their multimedia studio.

The students recorded, with the guest, an episode of the podcast titled “From black to white”, a production completely controlled by the students.

Pineda talked about his love for cinema since he was 5 years old and explained how a film is criticized, highlighting that “criticism is a bridge between the viewer and the film.”

He said that “a film review is not telling what the film is about.” To make a review you have to talk about the cinematographic elements: color, music, costumes, rhythm and the theme that the story wants to cover. “This is what differentiates a commentator from a critic. “Everyone can talk about cinema, but not everyone knows how to criticize it,” he highlighted.

Among the essential elements for a film critic he listed reading the history of cinema, having conceptual breadth, talking about the language of cinema and controlling subjectivity.

When asked what the most difficult job of a critic is, he responded “being fair.” He added that no matter what the critic does, he will also receive criticism equally.
