FISHBOWL

Trailer

Synopsis

After years of remission, Noelia's cancer has returned and is spreading rapidly. Exhausted by relentless treatment plans and pills that do more harm than good, she looks for another way out. Leaving aside the well-intentioned but suffocating gestures of her boyfriend Jorge, she returns to Vieques, the wonderful island east of Puerto Rico where she grew up; a land fighting its own poisoning after decades of contamination by US military operations. With Hurricane Irma approaching and with her mother in the serene comforts of home, Noelia seeks an answer to her pain in the land with which she has always been intertwined.

Director's Statement

First comes the character. I had an experience of my mother's death. My mother died of colorectal cancer and when that happens, I decide to approach writing the feature film a bit as a process of my own grief. And I was determined to work with a sick female body. But I didn't necessarily want to work from a biographical point of view, so that's when I worked with the character arc, initially of Noelia as such, and then I wanted to focus on colonialism and I didn't necessarily want to work on it in the metropolitan area and so on. , although there are some scenes that take place there. But in my search I care a lot about what is happening in Vieques, so I say well, I can work on the issue of colonization of the body through cancer and work on it as a link or a bridge with Puerto Rican colonialism through Vieques. , which has been one of the most serious symptoms of the political relationship with the United States due to all the war contamination that lies there. So yes, well, first the one that is born and then the decision to anchor in Vieques to add a layer that will reveal to us the truth of this Viequense situation, which I as an author was interested in exploring.
