Director's Statement

The idea was born in Tokyo and could not have been realized anywhere else. I love it if a story and its setting go together out of necessity. We shot Perfect Days 60 years after Ozu made his last film, An Autumn Afternoon, in Tokyo. And it is no coincidence that our hero's name is Hirayama… On the one hand, I was inspired by the strong feeling of “service” and “common good” in Japan, on the other hand, the sheer architectural beauty of these public toilets. places. I was surprised by how much “bathrooms” can be part of everyday culture, not just an almost shameful necessity. I believe “poetry” is not something you can pretend in a film, but rather a beautiful discovery, a gift that you receive as a filmmaker, from your actors, from the places, from the light, from everything that has to come together to form something like “poetry in motion.”

Wim Wenders

Wilhelm Ernst Wenders (Düsseldorf, August 14, 1945), known as Wim Wenders, is a German screenwriter, producer, actor and film director who has also worked in the United States. In 1967 he finally began studying at the Munich Film and Television School, which opened that year. He made his first feature film after finishing his degree, Summer in the City; Since then he will make one film a year. Having been born in a time when Germany began to turn towards American culture to forget its own past, Wenders tends to explore in his films the American presence in the European unconscious, or more specifically the Americanization of post-war Germany. With The American Friend (1977), based on the novel Ripley's Game, by Patricia Highsmith, Wenders was known internationally. From that moment on, and partly installed in the United States (with Coppola and Fred Ross), Wenders began what which could be called his most prolific period with intimate stories such as Paris, Texas (1984), The Sky Over Berlin (1987) or its sequel So Far, So Close! (1993). In 1998 he filmed, with a small group, Buena Vista Social Club, about a group of forgotten but legendary Cuban musicians, whose ages ranged between 60 and 80 years old. Among his latest productions is a documentary about his friend Pina Bausch. In addition to feature films, Wenders has also had an important activity as a director of short films, documentaries and television programs, as well as a screenwriter, producer and even actor.
