Director's Statement

Producer Saïd Ben Saïd sent me an email telling me that he had acquired the rights to Queen of Hearts. He thought . . . Well, he could do better. Or at least in another way. Queen of Hearts is much more explicit, but the point is, I already did it. My work has often pushed the boundaries of sexual representation. What interested me was the lie: denial has been a force in all my films since 36 fillette (1988). There are no lies in that movie, but it is about shame, the shame of a young woman, as well as her self-denial. I don't think you can make a movie like 36 Filette anymore; contemporary sensibilities would probably consider it too dangerous. But at least one can see it! Still, the lie at the heart of Queen of Hearts is astonishing; It's what makes the script great. I became interested in applying this captivating lie to another type of woman. Anne is not a predator; I had no interest in showing a predatory woman who simply adopts this stereotypically masculine way of desiring. She wanted the teenager to chase her. There is a difference between giving in to something and accepting it.

Catherine breillat

Catherine Breillat (Bressuire, July 13, 1948) is a French film director based in Paris, recognized for her documentary work based on the problems of sexuality, gender problems and the competition of brotherhood, and also noted for her I work as a novel author. Catherine Breillat is controversial because of the way she presents sexuality. In 1999 she worked with porn actor Rocco Siffredi in the film titled Romance, considered one of the first films with real sex scenes that were destined for the commercial cinema circuit. Her work has been associated with cinema of the body genre. In an interview with Senses of Cinema, she described David Cronenberg as another filmmaker she believes has a similar approach to sexuality in film. It has been noted that Breillat remains committed to long takes, particularly during scenes of sexual negotiation, a technique that shows the virtuosity of its artists and emphasizes the political and philosophical elements of sex.
